What do you get when you mash up a virtuosic bluegrass mandolinist, a traditional Irish fiddler, and an old-timey songster?
Kenny Blackwell (mandolin), John Weed (fiddle), and Stuart Mason (guitar and mandola) are the bluegrass-roots trio Little Black Train. From Depression-era gospel to Appalachian and Celtic dance tunes, they dig up the roots of bluegrass that traveled to America from Ireland and Scotland in the 19th century. Avid practitioners of the time-honored folk process, these boys combine new words and melodies with traditional songs from sources such as the Carter Family, Doc Boggs, and Charlie Poole. On the instrumental side, they mine fiddle tunes from archival sources in West Virginia, Ireland, and Scotland.
"Each of these three is amazingly accomplished, but something magical happens when they play together, their instruments swirling around one another like curls of smoke from a smoldering fire. This is old-time music at its most riveting!"
Glen Starkey, New Times SLO

| SLIGO RAGS |
For the Arroyo Grande Summer Concert Series, I am very happy to announce
that SLIGO RAGS will be performing on the SLOfolks stage again on August 1st.
NOMINATED FOR BEST FOLK ACT IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!!
From neighborhood pubs to outdoor festivals, house parties to concert halls, Michael Kelly, David Burns, Gordon Rustvold and Andy Reilly, aka the Sligo Rags, have been performing regularly throughout the Southland for the past two years. While the Rags stay true to the original intent of the traditional tunes they play, they are not afraid to be innovative. The addition of bluegrass-style flat-picking and world music rhythms to these time-honored songs creates a unique brand of Irish music that these bandmates are eager to share with . . . well, anyone who will listen.

Leo Kottke
"a poet...among the best talents around"
San Francisco Chronicle
"Peppino's music is deep and beautiful."
Tommy Emmanuel
"one of the most capable composers among fingerstyle guitarists"
Acoustic Guitar
"...D'Agostino plays steel-string guitar with virtuosity and complexity...Influences are as far-flung as the flamenco work of Paco de Lucia and the pop sensibility of the Beatles, evident in the songs he's written, which brim with memorable melodies."

| DIANA JONES & JILL KNIGHT |
Diana Jones
Friday, November 19, Solo at Coalesce Bookstore, 7PM ~ $15
Saturday, November 20, double bill with Jill Knight at Castoro Cellars, 7:30PM ~ $20
Folk Songs, It Turns Out, Were in Diana Jones’s Blood
"Ms. Jones, 43, is still mostly unknown outside folk circles in the United States, although her 2006 record, “My Remembrance of You,” received glowing reviews in British magazines like Uncut and Q. Her new CD is the kind of record that might have signaled a popular breakthrough, the emergence of a Joan Baez or a Judy Collins, had it appeared at the height of the folk or singer-songwriter movements of the 1960s and ’70s.
Ms. Baez, who inhabits Appalachian folk songs as well as anybody, said writers of Ms. Jones’s caliber come along only every so often. “There’s some kind of channeling from some other lifetime going on,” Ms. Baez said by phone from her home in Woodside, Calif. “I don’t know the answer to these things, but all I can think of is that it must come from some mysterious part of her soul.”

Eric Henderson
Friday January 14, Coalesce Bookstore, 7PM $20
Saturday January 15, Castoro Cellars, 7:30PM $20
There are only a handful of artists who possess an intangible quality that allows them to reach past the boundaries of the musical style to touch our inner soul.
Eric Henderson has been touching souls for many years with his unique ability to communicate with his guitar. It was clear that Eric had a calling when he first picked up the instrument at an early age.
Since his mother — a classically-trained pianist — first let Eric use her guitar when he was 6 years old, playing the guitar has been Henderson’s passion. He was soon ready for his own, which he mastered so well that at 13, Eric was invited to Spain to become one of only three people to study privately with the master guitarist Andres Segovia.

Coalesce Bookstore, March 25, 7PM
Castoro Cellars, March 26,7:30PM
City Folk is comprised of Keith Greeninger, Kimball Hurd and Roger Feuer. As the name implies, it is "folk" in the traditional sense that it is music of and for people with substantive and topical lyrics, yet with a contemporary urban edge.
Alisa Fineman and Kimball Hurd also perform as a duo but for this performance, Alisa will be joining City Folk.
Shimmering, awe-inspiring music that has captivated audiences with engaging rhythms and enchanting three-part harmonies….most comparable to the 'super group' Crosby, Stills and Nash .
City folk is a gem of a band ….NOT TO BE MISSED!"
